That's because most external monitors do not report their brightness settings properly, and OSX returns that error when queried. Hopefully fixed in an upcoming release.

Bug: 100% brightness
If AL sets your brightness to 100% no matter what you do, it is likely doing so because you have an external monitor plugged in.
